I admit, we, Filipinos, love to sing. If you’re visiting the Philippines for the first time, do not be surprised to find karaoke and videoke machines along the seaside or by the narrow streets in a remote town.

An American colleague, who was assigned in the quiet city of Dumaguete, once asked me how come he hears people singing their heart out anytime of the day. Truly, if I were on his shoes, I may be surprised to suddenly hear some loud singing while walking along the beach on a bright afternoon. I experienced it myself when my friends and I went to Nasugbu, Batangas, which is a few hours south of Manila. We were having lunch after a delightful swim and the cottage beside us was occupied by a family. From the child to the grandparent, everyone was eagerly trying to grab the microphone.

Sure thing, you can find videoke bars in various parts of the globe, but the Filipinos’ love of it stand out to those who have been to the country. When a Malaysian friend came to the Philippines, he instantly requested for a videoke session because he heard a lot about the Filipino penchant for music. Moreover, he believed that every Filipino loves to sing! We indulged on his request, Of course, the night wouldn’t be complete unless he, too, took the microphone and joined in the singing.

That’s catch. When you find the Filipinos in the midst of their revelry, expect that they ask you to sing at least a song or two. That’s the beauty of the Filipino hospitality. We will make sure we involve you in our celebration and we won’t allow you to just be a spectator. From birthdays to Christmas to a job promotion to just simply having fun, whatever the occasion, you’ll find a lot of singing in the Pearl of the Orient Seas. Don’t tell me you weren’t warned.
